Chemical VS. Physical
Exfoliators come in two common types—a chemical exfoliator or a physical exfoliator. Of the two, physical exfoliators have been around for many years, e.g., any type of facial "scrub" with small particles meant to be gently abrasive. While the chemical exfoliator is newer to the scene. Chemical exfoliators are often made from a gentle alpha hydroxy acid or fruit enzyme that exfoliates through its molecular properties. Both categories have their pros and cons and will depend on your skin type and the quality of the exfoliating product itself—whether chemical or physical.
