Your Skin Barrier
What exactly is the skin barrier? Your skin barrier is also called the “stratum corneum” and is often referred to by beauty experts and dermatologists as a “brick wall.” These tough skin cells are called corneocytes. What function does it play? To put it simply, one of its essential functions is to keep irritants out and hydration in. A strong skin barrier is essential to keeping your skin dewy, bouncy, and healthy. Unfortunately, your skin barrier can become damaged relatively quickly, causing hydration loss and irritated dry skin. Because barrier damage commonly occurs when your skin is stripped of its natural oils, avoid scrubbing too hard, over-exfoliating, or using harsh cleansers.
