Extremolytes (Myrothamnus Flabellifolia)

Nature provides the coveted model for resurrection and rejuvenation in the desert plant Myrothamnus flabellifolia, which is native to the mountainous regions of southern and central Africa. The plant—also called the Resurrection plant—boasts the ability to withstand years without water. Yet, after a rain shower, it will revive within the space of only a few hours, transforming from a withered plant to one that is vibrant and green. The source of this wonder is the molecule extremolyte. This molecule targets stress and premature aging behaviors in extremophiles, organisms existing in Earth’s harshest conditions. From freezing temperatures to intense heat, the extremolyte molecule forms defensive water layers around critical cells to stabilize function and prolong life.

In skincare, extremolytes are known for the following beneficial properties:

  • Revitalization and restoration. In a peer-reviewed article published in Cosmetics & Toiletries, an in vivo test showed that skin elasticity increased by 93.3% after 28 days of applying a 2% strength cream. Additionally, a 61% increase in skin smoothness was observed, among other notable effects.
  • Cellular protection against UV radiation and oxidative stress. Extremolyte molecules exhibit multi-functional behaviors that include a vigorous defense of proteins, cell structure, and human tissue against oxidative stress and UV rays. These attributes have made extremolytes a much sought-after ingredient in skincare serums and creams.
