Want to take your skin to the next level without turning your bathroom into a chemistry lab? Here are six solid tips that still work, no matter how many new trends come and go.
(1) Never skip SPF. We all know SPF matters, but most people still don't wear it properly. Here's the truth: every fancy serum or pricey skin whitening treatment you use is basically a waste without sunscreen. In fact, retinol, acids, and brightening ingredients all make your skin more sensitive to UV rays. And UV exposure is deepening those dark spots you're trying to fix. Stick to broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, and reapply every two hours if you're outside (yes, even when it's cloudy).
(2) Try sample sizes first. You don't need to go broke experimenting with skincare. The best skincare products are the ones that actually work for your skin. So before committing to a pricey firming facial serum or a hyped-up clean beauty product, try the travel size.
No one wants to walk around with a rash because a natural moisturizer for dry skin turned out to be a nightmare in a tube. Apply a little to your jawline or behind your ear and see how your skin reacts. If it plays nice, give it a few weeks before deciding whether it earns a full-time spot in your lineup.
(3) Your acne is trying to tell you something. Experiencing a random breakout? Your face might be spilling your secrets.
Forehead & hairline: Possibly caused by hair products or sweat.
Cheeks: Your pillowcase and phone are probably dirtier than you think.
Jawline & chin: Hello, hormones. These breakouts often sync up with your cycle.
If you're prone to hormonal acne, products with salicylic acid or a natural facial peel can help. Just don't squeeze. Keep some hydrocolloid patches handy and let them do the dirty work.
(4) Double cleanse at night. If you're wearing sunscreen (and you should be), a quick rinse might not cut it at night. Start with a high-quality, oil-based cleanser to break down SPF and grime, then follow with a water-based cleanser or your go-to oily skin face wash.
(5) Use the right exfoliant for your skin type. AHAs (like glycolic or mandelic acid): Good for dry or sensitive skin types. Mandelic acid is a better bet for deeper skin tones since it's gentler and less likely to worsen hyperpigmentation.
BHAs (salicylic acid): Goes deeper into the pores. Ideal for acne-prone or oily skin types.
Only exfoliate 1-3 times a week. And always follow with a solid moisturizer.
(6) Treat your skin from the inside out. You can spend a fortune on the best glowing skin products, but if you're living on sugar, dairy, and processed food, you're making it harder than it needs to be.
Some quick skin-friendly swaps:
Trade chips for almonds or chia seeds (hello, omega-3s)
Add in more vitamin C-rich foods like bell peppers and oranges
Go for whole grains instead of white bread or pasta
Also, drink more water. Hydrated skin starts from within. Pair that with affordable vegan skincare, and you're leveling up from both sides.
Skincare doesn't have to be complicated, but it does have to be consistent. Invest in what works for your skin, keep things simple, and trust that results take time.
