Wondering if your sunscreen is drying out your skin? While sunscreen is effective at protecting, preventing, and even delaying signs of aging, it is not inherently hydrating. According to beauty experts, certain sunscreen formulations may actually contribute to skin dryness. This is because mineral sunscreens often contain zinc oxide, a powerful ingredient that protects against UVA and UVB burns.
However, zinc oxide is also an astringent that can block natural skin secretions such as sweat and sebum, which may worsen dry skin conditions. But this doesn't mean you should skip applying SPF. If you have dry skin, look for sunscreens containing ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and plant oils, which can help prevent dryness and flaky skin.
